For the Haultin italic, see A. Tinto, «I tipi della stamperia del popolo romano (1561-1570)», Gutenberg-Jahrbuch 1967, p. 35; there is one example in Madrid in 1615, a few in the late 1690s, when the face was mixed with Guyot's pica italic, but recorded use in Aragón spans the whole century and includes Barcelona, Valencia, Zaragoza, Lérida, and Orihuela.

Haultin's pica roman (Type specimen facsimiles I, London 1963, no. 14, item 393) has the same Aragonese range as his italic. I have records for it in Seville in the middle of the century, but none for Madrid. The 8 mm. caps, seem to derive from a single set of matrices with a badly justified S, for this letter is always tilted backwards; but apart from printers in Barcelona, Zaragoza, Valencia, and Tortosa, it was used by Luis Sánchez of Madrid in the 1620s, and in Seville in 1678.

It seems almost superfluous to quote Steinberg on this point: «Neither political, constitutional, ecclesiastical, and economic events, nor sociological, philosophical, and literary movements can be fully understood without taking into account the influence which the printing press has exerted upon them» (S. H. Steinberg, Five hundred years of printing, Harmondsworth, 1974, p. 11). A most important study of the sociological significance of popular verse in Golden Age Spain has been made by M. C. García de Enterría in Sociedad y poesía de cordel en el Barroco, Madrid, 1973.
