Nancy Hanway's feminist reading of Una excursión analyzes Lucio's use and depiction of the indigenous women as indicative of his true, though hidden, mission: «whether or not he admits it to himself, he certainly knows that the government's plan is a wholesale takeover of indigenous lands» (129). While I cede that this is the case early in the book, I argue that we must attend to what Hanway calls the difficulties of the «evasive, peripatetic quality of Mansilla's writing» (133) so as to see Mansilla's style as his ideological approximation to barbarism itself. While I am interested in Lucio's treatment of Pablo, there are many fruitful pairings that can be made between the work of the two siblings. In an innovative reading, Hanway chooses to read Una excursión alongside Eduarda's famous short story «El ramito de romero» so as to address questions bodies, space, and the nation-space in the acquisition and use of different knowledges.
